About the Books of Poetry

The Books of Poetry include Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon.

Job

The book of Job is believed to be one of the earliest books of the Bible as it is set in a period of time preceding the patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph), circa 2,000 B.C. It gives insight into the cosmic struggle of good and evil, right and wrong, God and Satan, and the spiritual warfare in which mankind resides.

Psalms

The book of Psalms is a compilation of Jewish psalms covering the period from the time of Moses (c. 1410 B.C.) to the post exile period c. 430 B.C. These psalms provide some of the most beautiful and meaningful poetry in all of literature, addressing the full range of human emotion as well as provision of God for mankind.

Proverbs

The book of Proverbs is a book on wisdom – the ability to know and do what is right in the practical matters of daily life. King Solomon is considered one of the wisest men in history, an answer to his prayer asking God not for wealth or power, but for wisdom to rule his people. Solomon, one of King David’s sons, ruled over the nation of Israel during its greatest period of peace and prosperity. Solomon authored many of the proverbs in this book, but also compiled the wise writings of others to include in the book. Solomon’s proverbs were written by 931 B.C., and his proverbs in chapters 25-29 were collected by Hezekiah about 230 years later, 715 – 686 B.C.

Ecclesiastes

The book of Ecclesiastes is the book about Vanity. Apart from God, the pursuits of mankind are empty and without meaning. With God, our lives can be filled with meaning and eternal purpose. Solomon also authored this book, probably later in his life, about 935 B.C.

Song of Solomon

Another book authored by King Solomon, the Song of Solomon, is both a powerful love song and an important Biblical allegory. This allegory pictures Israel as God’s espoused bride and the New Testament Church as the Bride of Christ. Solomon probably wrote this book early in his reign, about 965 B.C.
