Sermon on the Mount

Sermon on the Mount, Part 5 – Perspectives

Perspectives on the Sermon on the Mount

In today’s lesson, we take one final look at the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus came not only to confirm the Old Testament Law, but to elevate it to the highest level – a level of holiness and perfection. It is a standard that can only be attained in the power of the Holy Spirit operating in the life of a believer.

We have seen in the past few lessons that the Sermon in the Mount is not just some syrupy sweet, feel-good pep talk. It is in fact a call to holiness and perfection that only the born-again, spirit-filled believer can begin to attain.

Final attainment of the moral standard of the Sermon on the Mount will only be fulfilled in eternity. Until then, the Sermon on the Mount is the lofty goal, the North Star that points us in the proper direction toward which we are to be steadily progressing.

Are You Listening?

In some ways, the Sermon on the Mount reminds me of half-time locker room talks by my athletic coaches in high school and college. When we were not doing well, our coaches could use some pretty strong, direct talk to motivate us to perform better. In my military service, those types of “talks” by drill sergeants and commanders could be significantly stronger, louder, and much more direct (often questioning even our lineage and physical makeup). While Jesus’ words are always proper and clean, His message is also direct and on target. He who has ears, let him hear!
