The Ten Commandments

Exodus 23-24: More of the Mosaic Law

More laws, then God’s glory revealed

Ten Commandments, the Law, and the Altar

In today’s lesson, we see God give Moses the remainder of the Law. Moses and the elders are called up to the mountain and the glory of God is revealed to them. God then calls Moses up further into the mount to receive the commandments on stone tablets.

In chapters 23 and 24 of Exodus, we see:

  1. Laws about master and servant relationships;
  2. Laws about personal injuries;
  3. Laws about property rights;
  4. Laws about crimes against humanity.

Yes, we do need laws and lawyers

In some ways these chapters are boring reading, similar to reading a lawbook. However, most of our laws today are based upon these precepts. I am glad that the Word of God says, “Thou shalt not kill.” It protects me and my family. I am happy the Bible says, “Thou shalt not steal.” It protects what little property I have. These and the other laws are basic to having order in a society.

Who Determines Right and Wrong in A Society?

There are those who raise the question today, “What is right and what is wrong?” Some say that what is right and wrong is relative. Dr. J. Vernon McGee relates a discussion on this topic that he was having with a college professor who claimed to be an atheist. The professor maintained that right and wrong are relative, that what he would think is right and what I would think is right could be poles apart. Then he asked Dr. McGee, “On what do you base your dogmatic conclusions?” Dr. McGee replied, “I base them on the Word of God.” He went on to tell him that his nature was just like the professor’s nature, and that he would like to give in in certain places, and would like to let the bars down here and there, but God has given us a standard to follow.

The interesting thing is that God’s standard has produced societies in which there has been a measure of law and justice. On the contrary, if relativism is pursued to its logical end, the result is a “society” where crime, warfare, and anarchy prevail, with “survival of the fittest” choosing winners and losers.

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. Psalm 19:7

…the soul that sinneth, it shall die. Ezekiel 18:4

Romans 6:1-2

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. Romans 8:3
